Duke NESCent Renovation

Erwin Mill is a historic structure on Duke University’s campus. Our design team was commissioned to provide architectural and interior design services to accommodate a variety of collaborative research, conferencing, office, and support spaces for the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent).

Our designers worked to integrate and highlight the existing structural elements of the building by exposing it’s wood beams and ceiling details. These historical qualities are juxtaposed by curved walls that delineate the conference areas.

RND worked with each department’s leaders to understand the unique programs associated with each. As a result, the space was transformed into an inviting and collaborative learning center for staff, students, and visitors.
