NC State Veterans Home – Salisbury, Renovation and Addition
Built in the 1950s, the Salisbury State Veterans Home began its life as a hospital and was converted in the 1980s to a 99-bed Veterans Home which had not been renovated since. RND worked closely with the MilVets and the home’s management company to plan for a 20-phase renovation that would still keep the facility fully operational. Renovations included new finishes throughout, replacement of all casework and nurse’s stations, complete fire alarm replacement, security upgrades, lighting replacement in corridors and common areas, and new furniture.
Exterior upgrades included renovations to the main entrance for ADA upgrades and storm water management and a newly landscaped courtyard.
A new 2,800 SF Event Space and Winter Garden were built that included an outdoor garden within the perimeter.
The project began construction right at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. RND was sincerely fortunate to work with open-minded, flexible partners in construction, design, and the owner and were able to devise a way to continue working in this occupied building at a time that was fraught with challenges to keep COVID from spreading through the greatest at-risk community. We are very proud of the work we did in this facility at that trying time.
