3608 University Drive

3608 University Drive

In 1997, RND Architects outgrew its existing office space in Durham and purchased an empty lot on University Drive to build upon. The firm designed a non-typical two-story building on the site which parallels its parking lot. The site-responsive structure steps down the site and embraces visitors by exposing its vertical circulation on the exterior of the building.

Tall, oversize windows admit light deep into the building and provide ample views from offices on both floors. This expanse of glazing on the east strongly contrasts the monolithic southern facade, which parallels the busy main street. The building is home to four beautiful commercial suites. The RND Architects office currently occupies Suite 204.

NCSU Makerspace 3D Print Lab

NCSU Makerspace 3D Print Laboratory

Inspired by the award-winning design of Hunt Library on NC State University’s campus, our designers utilized bold colors and sleek finishes to attract visitors.

The high performance space is home to a number of specialty electrical and mechanical systems. Despite its technological advancement, our design team remained sensitive to the aesthetic appeal and user-friendliness of the space.

Included within the project scope was the design and construction of two recording studios, five performance spaces, classrooms, sound booths, control rooms, practice rooms, acoustically isolated spaces for recording, and new faculty offices.

Each spaceĀ was designed with careful consideration to their acoustic performance and aesthetic, while remaining withinĀ a low project budget. Today, the Arts West Building plays a significant role on Elon’s campus as a center for musical arts and performance.

Elon School of Health Sciences

Elon School of Health Sciences

RND was selected to design Elon University’s new School of Health Sciences by renovating a former windowless factory. Our design professionals transformed the vacant box building into a beautiful, bright learning and research space.

The facility, first opened in the early 1960’s, consisted of a hodgepodge of eight individual buildings added together over time. The greatest project challenge was to design a livable, educational environment out of the vast, windowless factory.

Today, theĀ Francis Center is home to a number of specialized labs, such as therapy rooms, observation rooms, an anatomy lab, biochemics lab, simulation exam rooms, metabolic lab, osteology lab, and more. In addition,Ā we designed several classrooms, a large commons area, a fitness facility, and a student lounge.

We moved into the reconstructed facility about one year ago and still don't have any things we would change if we were to embark on the project again. Thank you to RND for the excellent guidances provided at each step of this project.

Duke Coca Cola Building

Coca Cola Building Renovation

Duke University outgrew their administrative space and asked our design team to expand their footprint into the historic Coca Cola Building. The structure, which was formerly a bottling plant, underwent a dramatic transformation as a result of our design team’s intervention.

RND provided both architectural and interior design services for this renovation. We interviewed members of each affected university department to gain an understanding of their needs and ideal solutions. We then integrated this information into a revised open floor plan.

The completed project fluidly integrates public and private offices with open work stations and conference areas. Our interior designer worked intimately with systems furniture vendors to produce a bright and colorful environment abundant with natural light.

DRH Emergency Department

DRH Emergency Department Renovation

Our design teams transformed the space by introducing new finishes and re-purposing several of its administrative offices into new patient and exam rooms.

Our team was responsible for the project from schematic design through construction administration. We advised the owner in selecting finishes and furniture that would withstand the high traffic of the facility while creating an inviting and warm environment. In the lobby, we introduced a custom steel canopy that floats above the waiting chairs. It was one of many low-cost architectural interventionsĀ designed to create a more dynamic and engaging space.

Our team upgraded the building’s aesthetic conditions, including the construction of a new curtain wall main entry, as well as extensive upgrades to it’s mechanical and electrical systems.

We designed new patient rooms, nurse stations, and waiting areas. The designs and programmatic layouts were generated out of extensive conversations with both patients and staff. Our design team recorded their feedback to create efficient spaces that would increase staff productivity and patient comfort.
